Put live aerodrome weather on your own site
A decoded METAR for any reporting aerodrome, on your club, school or ops page. Three sizes, three themes, no account and no API key, and no script to paste, so it survives the site builders that strip them.
What it will not do
Said here rather than in the small print, because an embed is read by people who cannot see any of this. Every size states the time of the observation and how old it is. Past an hour and a quarter the category colour comes off, because a green chip is a statement about now and many aerodromes stop reporting overnight. If the weather service cannot be reached the panel says that, rather than showing the last thing it knew. And every size carries the word unofficial: this is a decoded copy of a public observation, not an approved briefing source.
Questions
- Is it really free, and is there a catch?
- It is free and there is no account, no key and no limit. The catch, such as it is: every size carries a small link back to pilotised.com. That link is the reason the widget exists, and the only way this site gets found, so it is not removable.
- Will it work on Wix, Squarespace or my club's CMS?
- Yes. The snippet is a plain iframe and nothing else, so there is no script to strip, which is what breaks most third-party widgets on those builders. If your page can hold a YouTube video it can hold this. The one thing to check is that your builder's HTML or embed block is available on your plan; the cheapest tiers of some builders disable it entirely.
- How often does it update?
- The panel reloads itself every ten minutes, using a meta refresh rather than a script so it keeps working where scripts are stripped. Routine METARs are issued half-hourly at busy fields and hourly elsewhere, so it is never more than a fraction of a cycle behind.
- What happens if the weather service goes down?
- It says so. It does not keep showing the last report it had, and it does not show a category colour it cannot stand behind. This matters more in an embed than anywhere else: the panel may be on a screen in a clubhouse for days, and nobody looking at it can see any of the wording that surrounds it here.
- What happens to an old report?
- Past an hour and a quarter the colour comes off the category chip and it reads, for example, VFR then rather than VFR, with the age beside it. A green chip is a statement about now. Many small aerodromes stop reporting overnight, so this is a common state rather than an edge case.
- Can I use it for flight planning?
- No, and the widget says so itself: every size carries the word unofficial. It is a decoded copy of a public observation, not an approved briefing source, and it carries no NOTAMs, no TAF interpretation and no authority. Brief from the official service for your area.
- Which aerodromes can I use?
- Any that publishes a METAR: the same set the decoder covers, which is most licensed aerodromes worldwide and very few small strips. If a code returns nothing here, that aerodrome does not publish one, and the nearest reporting field is usually the better choice.
The rest of the site
The widget is a slice of the METAR and TAF decoder, which explains every group of a report and its forecast. There is also a route weather brief that rates a whole route and its alternates, and a live map of traffic, hazards and aerodrome weather.
